One of the reasons that the Mavericks should fare well tonight in the season opener, where they’re hosting Houston, is the all-around threat that No. 2 represents.

As the Dallas Morning News wrote about the nine-time NBA All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist:

“Kidd is one of the best point guards in NBA history, and Howard is an athletic player who can run. There’s no good reason Howard shouldn’t mesh with Kidd.

No one is better than Kidd at grabbing the rebound, pushing the ball and getting it to his guys sprinting down the wing.”

In their season preview, the Morning News added:

“Kidd won’t be much of a scoring threat. But his passing, his smarts and the threat that he can still sling in some 3-pointers make him a tough assignment for any opponent.”

USA Today agrees, citing Jason as the leader of the running-based offense:

“Leading that push is Jason Kidd. After being acquired from New Jersey in February, the veteran point guard averaged 9.9 points and 9.5 assists in 29 regular-season games for Dallas. After getting thoroughly outplayed by Hornets counterpart Chris Paul in the playoffs, Kidd is thrilled at the chance of starting fresh with Carlisle’s offense.”
