The Mavericks organization is committed to building a sustainable winner in Dallas and Jason Kidd is committed to seeing it through.

The Mavs announced this week that they had signed Coach Kidd to a multi-year extension to remain coach of the Mavericks for the foreseeable future. Exact terms were not announced.

This is the second time in the last two years that Dallas has extended Jason’s contract. He previously received a multi-year extension during their 2024 run to the NBA Finals. In a statement release by the team, J-Kidd thanked Mavericks owner and team governor Patrick Dumont and Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison for their continued support.

“I’m grateful for the belief that Patrick and Nico have in me, and the trust we’ve built while working together to construct a team that Dallas can be proud of,” Jason said. “We have a great group of players here who love basketball, are talented and coachable. … It’s even more special that I can continue to coach the team that drafted me, and where I was able to win a title as a player. I’m looking forward to what’s ahead and continuing to work toward bringing another championship back to Dallas.”

Jason began his NBA playing career with the Mavericks when they selected him in the 1995 NBA Draft. He spent two-and-a-half years with the Mavs at the outset of his career, then returned in 2008, after tenures in Phoenix and New Jersey, and was the leader of a Dallas team that won the first NBA championship in franchise history in 2011. Kidd retired two years later and immediately took over as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. After stints as the head man in Brooklyn and Milwaukee, and a stint as an assistant with the Lakers that included a NBA Championship in 2020, Jason returned to Dallas to be the team’s head coach in 2021.

He enters his fifth year as head coach of the Mavericks later this month, having compiled a record of 179-149. In those four years, the Mavs have appeared in the playoffs twice, making a run to the Western Conference Finals in 2022 and then winning the west in 2024 en route to just the third NBA Finals appearance in franchise history in 2024. Dumont believes Jason is the man to take the franchise all the way once again.

“Our entire organization deeply appreciates Coach Kidd’s leadership, focus and positive energy,” he said in a statement. “Coach Kidd embodies everything our organization wants in a leader, and I am happy he will be here for many years to come. We are confident that he will continue to lead our team in a thoughtful and principled manner as we pursue our goal of bringing championships to the city of Dallas.”
